“So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.”
‭‭James‬ ‭3:5-8‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Whoa 😳 our tongues, according to these scripture verses are fire. The writer, James says a world of unrighteousness! Whew! That’s deep. Sister, I’ve been reading this and can’t get over the fact that my tongue, one of the smallest members on my body, could cause such destruction.

My tongue, your tongue, can either set fires to destroy, and tear down, or can be used for the glory of God to build up and encourage. How have you been using your tongue Sis? Have you used it to slander, gossip, spew out hateful words, and curse? Or have you used this small member to speak gently to your child or husband?

If you’re honest and are like me don’t always use your tongue to the glory of the God of the universe, guess what friend, there is hope for us in Jesus Christ! He is able to transform our tongues, hearts, and minds in away that we will no longer devour others with our words, but bring life to them!

How you ask? With scripture and prayer! As we read God’s Word, memorize it, and meditate on it, it will transform our hearts, which then transforms our tongues! Prayer, then reinforces our renewed minds, because as we pray and ask God to direct our thoughts and words, guess what… He will!

Father God in heaven, forgive us for our fiery tongues. Lord transform our hearts, minds, and words to look like yours. We ask that from today on, that we are mindful of our thoughts, because they become words, and if we stumble, help us to continue to go back to you for your transformative power! In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
