I have a question for you? I’ll start with my single sisters first. How are you preparing for marriage? To my married sisters, same question but with a little twist: how are you preparing to stay in your marriage? Think about that for a moment.

Both questions have one word that really begs you to pay attention to it: prepare

prepare – 1a : to make ready beforehand for some purpose, use, or activity prepare food for dinner. b : to put in a proper state of mind is prepared to listen. 2 : to work out the details of : plan in advance preparing a campaign strategy.

When preparing to cook a meal we think about the ingredients, calories, taste, flavors, colors, all that good stuff. How about when it comes to marriage? Are we considering all the things that go into it? Being equally yolked? If we’re able to trust the person we’re deciding to be in a committed covenant with? Is what I say and do in my marriage going to produce  a sweet smelling or savory smell, or are my words and actions going to be stinky and or produce nasty flavors?

Either in singleness or marriage we have to be prepared for the work God has given us. Both need intentional  preparation. As I prepare to stay in my marriage, I go back to the head chef and cook book (God and his Word) daily to make sure I have the right cooking utensils, ingredients, and cooking space to make a fulfilling and satisfying experience. I notice that when I don’t prepare with prayer, the armor of God, and asking God to fill me with His Holy Spirit, that days meal isn’t so good.

I guess in a nutshell what I’m trying to say is wherever you are in your life, go to the Master and allow Him to get you prepared for the next step.
